Imagine this: it’s 5 p.m. on Friday and you’re headed out of the office for an epic adventure in Europe, South America, or across the country. Sounds awesome right? Now the catch, you have to be back in work by 9 a.m. on Monday. No long weekends, no vacations days — just 64 hours to do something you'll truly enjoy. This is the motivation behind Beat Monday, an effort by Mike Chambers and Jason Antin — adventurers who gave up their unscheduled days for nine-to-five jobs — to reimagine the weekend.
“I’ve always hated people who complain about not having enough time to do things,” says Chambers. “And I found myself, especially in the last six months, complaining that I just don’t have enough time to go and do any of the adventure stuff that I like to do.”
Chambers teamed up Antin to figure out how they can utilize their free time in a more meaningful way. They decided to plan their first feat: summiting Mount Rainier. On Friday, June 3, they left their respective cities of Boston and Denver to embark on the journey (check out a short clip below for a peak of their trip). After arriving in Washington they began their ascent on Saturday at around 9 p.m., and by 9 a.m. on Sunday they summited the mountain. After reaching the top they skied back to the trailhead, covering a total of 19.6 miles and about 11,000 feet of vertical gain, according to their trip report.
“Out of all the things we’ve done in our life, it was the most fun experience because that time component just added this element that was so rare,” says Chambers. “It was like adding an Amazing Race component.”
Chambers says that the Mount Rainier trip is what sparked their desire to redefine the weekend. They’ve created a list of nine more adventures to complete within the 64-hour time frame. From running with the bulls in Pamplona to climbing El Capitan at Yosemite, these quests are far from your average Sunday brunch.
The men are currently in the process of securing a production deal to create a series based on their expeditions. And while they’re aware that not everyone might be able to summit a mountain in only two days, they want to encourage others to beat Monday by doing something they care about.
“Find out whatever that activity or thing or experience is that makes you lose sleep at night, and find a way to incorporate it in your life every single weekend,” says Chambers. “Stop at nothing to make sure that you’re keeping that a part of your life.”
