Hellhole Gravel Grind (Cordesville, South Carolina)
This two-day gravel stage race is held in the Hellhole Swamp area within the Francis Marion National Forest, named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, or “The Swamp Fox,” who used the creeks, swamps, and unforgiving forest to ambush the British. Each day features 75 miles of largely unpaved roads and trails. Like the Red Coats, racers may encounter snakes, alligators, dogs, and other wildlife. There’s also an optional evening prologue the night before kick off. Off the bike, South Carolina’s Lowcountry offers much outdoor goodness including kayaking, mountain biking, and fishing.
