Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina
Dig for Clams in a Lowcountry Salt Marsh
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources maintains public shellfish grounds up and down the coast, perfect for a day of digging up and feasting on fresh clams. For a true Lowcountry experience, hit Hunting Island State Park, a 5,000-acre undeveloped barrier island, outside Beaufort, surrounded by easy-to-access shellfish spots along the Harbor River. All you really need are some garden tools and a bucket for the keepers—and, of course, white wine, garlic, and butter to steam them afterward. Check SCDNR’s online maps for season info and closures.
