Mount Rushmore National Memorial, South Dakota
Scale the Back of a Landmark
Though most of the 3 million people who flock to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial each year do so to see the presidents’ faces etched into the front of the granite wall, you should head to the backside for a real adventure. The memorial has more than 730 climbing routes, rated 5.6 to 5.12, along with numerous 10-foot boulders. For easy access, park at the Wrinkled Rock Climbing Area, on State Highway 244, where you can also camp for free. Sylvan Rocks Guides leads authorized climbing excursions within the memorial, too.
