Salmon-Challis National Forest, Idaho
Ski a Sawtooth Couloir
A bustling summer destination in the heart of the Salmon-Challis National Forest, the town of Stanley turns into a ghost town come winter. Which is just fine by its 63 year-round residents. Because once the snowpack stabilizes, they have the Sawtooth Range’s couloirs and dry powder to themselves. Well, almost. A few outfitters, including Sawtooth Mountain Guides, offer trips to the couloirs, complete with yurts and campsites between the jagged peaks.
