6. Build a Blaze
A Swedish torch—an old-school, badass-looking cooking system—takes just minutes to make and will seriously up your camp cred.
1. Find a round, seasoned piece of firewood that stands upright on its own, then split it into four same-size pieces.
2. Reassemble the quarters, then hold the log together by tying baling wire, or even a clothes hanger, around it six inches from the bottom.
3. When you’re ready to light the fire, stuff the slits between the four wood pieces with dry leaves, bark, and wadded-up paper. Then top with finger-thick dry sticks and tamp down a few inches.
4. On top of the log, stack a layer of tinder and sticks, then light it. Embers will drop down into the slits, creating a self-feeding fire.
