Steve Irwin, known worldwide as the “Crocodile Hunter, was fatally wounded by a stingray after it stung him in the chest.
Irwin, 44, was snorkeling and shooting footage for a new wildlife project he was making with daughter Bindi, 8, for airing next year in the United States when he was killed by a wound to the chest. Wildlife experts believe the ray that killed Irwin (who was an avid surfer) probably felt trapped between the cameraman and Irwin.
Deaths resulting from stingray wounds are extremely rare and very few have been recorded in Australia.
Wreaths, flowers, and Irwin’s traditional khaki shirts were left outside Australia Zoo, the Irwin’s family home, for mourners to sign.
