A Brief History of Competitive Dog Jumping

The DockDogs Canine Aquatics Competition started in 1999 as an attraction for ESPN’s Great Outdoor Games. The games were cancelled in 2006, but DockDogs has been going strong since. It has grown to include 13,500 competitors with some 280 events each year (including the GoPro Mountain Games each June) competing in speed retrieval, extreme vertical, and big air.

While all breeds and mixes are allowed to enter (as long as they’re six months or older), rescue dogs dominate, taking the last six of the nine top spots in competition. No matter the breed or prowess, watching dogs leap into water — with the kind of enthusiasm only our best friends could muster — is a blast to watch. Just see for yourself in the video above.
