Rappel to and ski Silverton Mountain (CO)
Over the past few years, Silverton Ski Area has become the go-to for extensive remote terrain in Colorado, with nearly 2,000 acres accessible via a single chairlift and some 20,000 more by helicopter. Its latest push: Helping skiers access the steepest virgin lines on the mountain. By rappel.
On this new tour, guides provide skiers with harnesses and bring ropes to latch onto existing anchors buried in the snow. These lines are spread out over four runs in the Storm Peak area, including Madd Dogg (the steepest run at Silverton) and Pequeño 4, which was still unskied at time of publication. “Getting to the 90-foot rappel is the scary part,” says co-owner Aaron Brill. “It’s a big hanging snowfield. This program allows access to these pockets of snow that are the steepest on the mountain.”Back to top
