‘Fourth Phase’ Just Became the Lead Contender for Best Ski Movie of 2016

The teaser for Travis Rice's latest film with Red Bull and Brain Farm Cinema, The Fourth Phase, has arrived. The new snowboarding documentary follows 2008's That's It, That's All, and promises to surpass 2011's The Art of Flight — considered by some to be the best action sports movie of all time. But The Fourth Phase is even more cinematically ambitious. It's the first snowboard film shot entirely with 4K cameras, and follows the professional snowboarders (with returning buddies Mark Landvik and Pat Moore) into backcountry so remote, Rice hasn't even shared specific destinations where they've filmed on his social media posts during the last two years of filming.

"Immersion into the winter wilderness with a few trusted comrades and a vow not to ride anything we have ever ridden before has made this the most exciting project yet," Rice says. The video opens with a damn good David Attenborough-like voiceover poetically detailing the freezing, melting, and evaporating cycle of water in an insightful rumination on nature's gift to snowboarders. The teaser hits more like a Planet Earth episode, but we get a sneak peek at some of the heart-stopping airtime these guys are clocking in locations only accessible by helicopter. Too bad we'll have to wait until October 2016 for the full feature.
