Alex Gibney’s documentary about L. Ron Hubbard’s much-maligned Church of Scientology and its abuse of power over its followers leaves you feeling incredible rage and genuine sadness. The film finds its strength in damning on-camera interviews with former high-ranking members like Sara Goldberg, Mike Rinder, Marty Rathbun, and Oscar-winning writer-director Paul Haggis, who created shockwaves when he publicly resigned from Scientology in 2009. When you think you’ve heard everything, prepare for a whole new level of astonishment in this harshly critical exposé. Silence speaks volumes on the part of the Church, with Gibney listing every member that denied to comment, including John Travolta, Tom Cruise, and current leader David Miscavage, though it’d be only fair to state that given the film’s position, it’s unlikely there was ever any hope.
