Montage of Heck
Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was one of those enigmatic figures that left the public always wanting more, and his death by suicide at 27 has only deepened that curiosity. For that reason, he makes the perfect subject for the documentary treatment, which is probably why two of them came out just this year. But Montage of Heck director Brett Morgen, who also helmed The Kid Stays In The Picture, is the first filmmaker to get the Cobain family’s blessing to tell his story, likely due to his admirable credentials and his desire to make a film about the man, not the band. Morgen gets access to a vault of home videos that show intimate moments with the singer from boyhood all the way to his final years. The director doesn’t just focus on the grim, but instead gives us the full spectrum of Cobain’s short but profound life.
