Drakensberg Traverse, South Africa
Dubbed the “Barrier of Spears” by the Zulu people, Drakensberg has claimed the lives of unfortunate trekkers throughout the years — though official records of how many are not available. Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in South Africa, with dramatic pinnacles and buttresses, roaring rivers, deep caves, and powerful waterfalls. Exercise caution, as there’s no established trail along the 40-mile journey from Mont-aux-Sources to Cathedral Peak. To get to the iconic three-mile-long cliff face known as the Amphitheater, you’ll have to climb 50 rungs up a shaky chain ladder. Due to the treacherous nature of the hike, a local guide is recommended.
