Pitino sites declining standardized test scores as evidence that young people lack a “stick-to-it-ness” required to do well on any task that takes several hours to finish. He does not allow his players to bring their phones to team dinners, which he says tortures them more than any conditioning drill.
“Schools are now allowing phones into the classroom because they think they can help them [students] look up things.” he says. “That, to me, would be an absolute no.”
Once, when a recruit took out a phone during an interview, Pitino half-jokingly asked him if he would pull the same disrespectful stunt during a huddle before the last possession of a close game. He wants to see someone commit to a task. If they are at an interview, he expects them to be at the interview.
