Follow the GPS.
Like sailors, pilots are forever squinting at clouds, wondering what the weather’s going to do next. In the early days of aviation, that’s about all they could do. Today, there’s a huge amount of weather information available 24/7 over the airwaves. The Garmin Aera 560 Portable Aviation GPS, for instance, is a pocket-sized unit that in addition to providing aerial navigation also displays NEXRAD weather radar data that’s continuously updated via XM radio. Thanks to preloaded terrain data, the unit can also give you a heads-up when you’re about to plow into a mountain. And once you’ve reached your destination, it will give you turn-by-turn directions on the ground.
