Know the Breeds
Certain breeds make for better biking partners than others. “Select a breed that’s more dependent, that wants to work with you, and is athletic,” says Stewart, citing labradors, Chesapeake Bay retrievers, and golden retrievers. “Your more independent dogs would be bird dogs, German shorthairs, American pointers, and Irish setters,” he says. They’re more likely to run off on their own for long distances — they were bred for that kind of activity — but can still be trained to be great trail dogs.
