Teach Them to Run With You
It’s crucial to teach your dog to run alongside the bike, never in front of it. Ahead of you he runs the risk of hitting another biker. Let them run behind you only when necessary. “On tight singletrack, or a narrow bridge crossing, the dog is going to have to drop behind the bike, and if he gets distracted, he could get hurt.”
Train your dog to watch the bike, especially the front wheel, and not what’s going on in the countryside. Stewart suggests starting off walking the bike to get the dog heeling correctly, and if the dog’s attention starts to stray, gently turning the wheel into him so he’s aware of the wheel and learns to always keep an eye on it. “The two positions I want the dog in for biking are either left or right, but never darting in front.”
