Kelly Slater is a connoisseur of the best waves the world has to offer. He’s even built (and sold) the world’s greatest wave pool. So he’s no stranger to standing waves.

Recently, Slater enjoyed the rare event that happens a couple times each winter: when the Waimea River mouth can be dug out to create a standing, surfable wave.
While it happened a couple weeks ago, as filmer Eric Sterman notes, Sterman’s just recently posted it to his Instagram.

And could it be that the 11-time world champ is cheating on his famed wave pool? Or maybe he was just doing some research for version 2.0?
Whatever the case may be, Slater sure knows how to rip this wave, too.
