Kelty SB 20: Sleeping Bag Review

Kelty SB 20

EN comfort rating: 31 degrees F. Fill: 800 drydown. 37.5oz ($370,

The 2 pound, 5 ounce Kelty SB 20 might just be the goldilocks of the test. This lightweight sleeping bag hits just about everything in the middle of the pack–weight, price and comfort. With an EN comfort rating of 31 degrees thanks to 800 fill power drydown, it proved to be very comfortable in the field at near freezing tempatures.

It has more leg room than even the Feathered Friends; so much so in fact that it’s possible to not only change socks but to sleep with one knee up. The cinch system worked exceptionally well with a round cord for the mummy hood and flat cord for the draft collar, making them easy to distinguish in the dark. Designed for tent camping the SB 20 is only DWR coated on the hood and feat, which is good because the durable water repellent application makes the fabric rather “crunchy”. The rest of the bag has a nice tactile feel.

Overall: above average sleepability. If you’re not dead sure of your needs, the Kelty SB 20 is probably the best bet as it hits the middle of the road in all aspects. It’s warm, comfortable, has good attention to detail and is in the middle of the price range.

Caveat: Stuff sack is overbuilt and weighs over 2 ounces on its own. If you have specific backcountry needs, this is probably not the bag for you.

Best for: Not sure where your paddling will take you? This one can do it all.
