Fired Up, Ready to Blow?
The Overlook crater at Kilauea’s summit collapsed on Wednesday morning, triggering an explosion and hurling a huge column of ash into the air. (“Rockfalls and explosions that produce ash columns are expected to continue,” the USGS’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory noted.) It could be a prelude to a more massive eruption, as the volcano’s lava lake drops toward the island’s water table and sets up a potentially explosive combination.
