For the Lady Lurkers of Santa Cruz, California, stepping on to a skateboard isn’t always about pushing the limits or jumping down the most stairs, it’s also about being surrounded by other passionate female skaters who just want to cruise. But don’t let that fool you—these ladies can shred!
It all started when some of the original girls in the group would see each other at the local parks. Initially, they would just say, “Hi,” but after crossing paths multiple times, they started hitting each other up to go skate. As the relationships developed and the number of girls increased, they would joke about starting their own crew someday. Then, in the beginning of 2013, the Lady Lurkers became an official “crew.”
They now use social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to connect with others, share their progress, and spread the stoke. “I think that people have responded so well to us because we are regular girls in a male-dominated sport, and even though we aren’t the best skaters in the world, we are constantly learning, progressing, and pushing ourselves, and having a damn fun time doing it, too,” says team founder Kim Contreras.
These days, the Lady Lurkers are prepping for a road trip through Oregon. They will soon be piling seven girls into a van and heading out to skate some of the best parks in the country! Keep up with them on Facebook and Instagram.
