New surfing video game, ‘Surf World Series’, to release in 2017

Ready or not, 2017 is going to be the year that surfers finally get a new video game. It’s called “Surf World Series” and will be available on Play Station 4 and X Box One from Climax Studios.

It’s been years since surfers were treated to the likes of “Transworld Surf”, “Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer” and “Sunny Garcia Surfing”. And while those graphics are emblematic of the 1990s and early 2000s, it seems that Surf World Series is attempting to emulate that look for some reason.

Or maybe it’s the running issue that updating the surf video game is near impossible because graphics people have still yet to understand how to make a fluid thing like the ocean look realistic. Which is exactly why we haven’t gotten an update on the surf video game in over a decade.

While skateboarding and snowboarding continue to get new, realistic releases all the time for the latest systems, surfing has lagged well behind. It’s tough to get water right, and while we’re going to keep an open mind, “Surf World Series” does appear to not get a major update in graphics — at least not in this short trailer.

Being able to surf venues like Waimea Bay and Bells Beach, the game will be in an arcade format as well as online tournaments. There will be 6 playable characters, but no word yet if they will be real-life pro’s or just fictional characters.

Stay tuned for more information as we get it on the newest surfing video game.
