Costa Rica has long been an easy surf escape: Travel there is cheap, finding good waves isn’t hard and a continually growing infrastructure have made it the crown jewel of Central American adventure tourism. So for many surfers, the place has been done.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t nooks and crannies and unexplored places. Even today, years after Costa Rica’s cameo in Endless Summer II opened it to an influx of wave-riding travelers, you can still get out there in the land of Pura Vida. Those lonesome places that feed your soul are everywhere.

And that’s exactly what Dave Boehne, Joe Carberry, Nate Smieja and Costa Rica-native Coco Sandoval found earlier this year.

Out There is a story about doing something different, whether you’re simply traveling to escape the everyday, or going against family tradition to enhance your life. It’s a Jon Arman joint with SUP magazine.
