Pro wakeboarder Ben Leclair seriously injures spinal cord

French-Canadian wakeboarder Ben Leclair was seriously injured in a wakeboard accident on Friday, Nov 25. According to Surfer Today, Leclair was practicing at Kevin Henshaw’s Area 52 wakeboard facility in Florida when the injury occurred. Road2Recovery has started a campaign to help Leclair raise money for his medical bills.

Leclair was rushed to a trauma center in Orlando and was in emergency surgery a few hours later to stabilize the spinal cord injury he suffered. Details are still not entirely known, but R2R states that Leclair was to have another surgery Tuesday morning to hopefully help alleviate a pinch around the C5 area of his spinal cord. Surfer Today also states that Leclair is aware and there is no sign of brain injury.

With details beyond those little known, it also remains to be seen what kind of road ahead Leclair has. The plan is to transport him back to his home of Quebec once he is strong enough for travel, which would give him the chance to recover near family.

This horrific injury comes only months after Leclair’s big Internet video hit “Natural Playgrounds” made shockwaves through the wakeboarding community. Filmed in France earlier this year during record floods, it showcases the 23-year-old’s incredible skill-set and promise.

Our hearts go out to Leclair’s family and friends. Hopefully this is just a setback that he can soon overcome.
