Five decades before Roswell rocketed to otherworldly fame, this tiny Fort Worth bedroom community recorded America’s first UFO crash.
The Sightings: According to the April 19, 1897 edition of the Dallas Morning News, a spacecraft hit a windmill on the property of Judge J.S. Proctor, scattering debris and destroying the judge’s prize flower garden. The badly disfigured pilot, reportedly “not of this world,” died on impact and was given a Christian burial in an unmarked grave in the local cemetery. There’s even a state historical marker to prove it.
Nearest Military Base: Although Jim Hickman, research specialist for the Mutual UFO Network, believes a military base was built right in Aurora (and since dismantled), the nearest active base is Carswell Field, 6 miles from site of impact.Back to top
