Roswell, New Mexico
This town of 48,000 in southeastern New Mexico is ground zero when it comes to alien activity. There’s a UFO Museum and Research Center, a tour of the airfield where alien bodies were allegedly hidden, and an annual UFO Festival with such speakers as former abductees, ET researchers, and ex-military who once had top clearance.
The Sightings: It all started in July 1947 when a ranch foreman found mysterious field debris. Colonel Blanchard, commanding officer at Walker Air Force base, reported the 1,300-foot object as a flying disk. Within 24 hours, a retraction was issued complete with pictures of the Project Mogul weather balloon that Blanchard’s superiors said had been designed to monitor Soviet nuclear activity. Hundreds of witnesses, some whom were incarcerated, corroborated the initial report and fingered the government in a massive cover-up that’s still being debated to this day.
Nearest Military Base: It took less than 24 hours to shut down Colonel Blanchard, but 22 years to close Walker Air Force base that’s just three miles away.Back to top
