For centuries, Amazonian shamans have been touting the properties of ayahuasca, a beverage made from the bark of a medicinal vine found in tropical regions of South America. Every year, legions of travelers journey to Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador, where they can legally take this jungle potion, said to cure any illness, and enjoy some spiritual revelations. Although opportunities to consume watered-down versions of the drug, typically prepared as a tea, have sprung up domestically, travelers who want the real experience – with not only highly powerful hallucinogens, but also a fair amount of public indecency – head to shamanic retreats like Blue Morpho in the Peruvian jungle for workshops in accessing the spirit world. Howard Stern’s sidekick, Robin Quivers, has talked publicly about how her ayahuasca experience changed her life. She seems enlightened.
