Skills: Paddling Downwind
The skills to pay the bills. If you’re a paddler, you gotta’ have em’. And the fun part is developing those skills. Morgan Hoesterey is one of standup paddling’s best all-around athletes. She can race prone paddleboard. She can surf. She can read, and ride, bumps. Yes, she has the skills to pay em’.
So we’ve talked her in to doing a series of instructional videos for us at SUPthemag.com. Here, she gives us an overview of downwind paddling with the help of Rachel Bruntsch, who’s also a stellar paddler, both outrigger and standup.
Downwind paddling is definitely one of the pillars of our sport and can be done in more places than just the ocean. The Columbia River in Hood River, Lake Tahoe, Lake Michigan, anywhere there’s wind swell and a bumps to ride (and good places to park shuttle vehicles), a downwind run can be established. Imagine the possibilities. Time to work on your Skills.
