SUP Foil Racers Make History In Hawaii

Maui has always been an island of watersports innovation. Windsurfing, big-wave surfing, SUP and foiling continue to be pushed to their limits by a local cadre of the world’s top ocean athletes. This past weekend, a handful of those athletes—including Zane Schweitzer, Dave Kalama, Austin Kalama (Dave’s son in his first channel crossing), Mark Raaphorst and Alan Cadiz—entered the SUP foil division of the Molokai Holokai to cross the Pailolo Channel from Maui to Molokai.

Big open ocean swells and 25-knot winds made for ideal conditions for the SUP foil crew to make their mark. Schweitzer eventually took the win and broke the record for time across the channel with a blistering 2:24 time. Check out the video of him closing in on Molokai, above.

Kalama led for a big chunk of the race, though, and only lost when he hit the doldrums toward the end of the race. Read his fantastic take in the post below.
