5 of surfing’s better halves

Behind every successful professional surfer, there is usually a (more talented and attractive) woman. Here are five of surfing’s better halves:

Julian Wilson and Ashley Osborne
A couple so genetically blessed it almost makes your eyes bleed, 24-year-old Julian Smith from Queensland, Australia, and model Ashley Osborne (above) have been dating for two years. Smith credits Osborne with changing his year around in 2013, his results steadily improving as she traveled full-time with him in between her increasing modeling gigs in New York and Sydney. “Having Ash traveling with was crucial,” Wilson told GrindTV.com recently. “I compete better when I’m happy, and I’m never as happy as when we are together.”

Kelly Slater and Kalani Miller
While Kelly Slater famously dated Pamela Anderson and has also been linked to actress Cameron Diaz and models Gisele Bündchen and Bar Refaeli, it is Kalani Miller who stole his heart more than six year ago. Kalani is a San Clemente, California-born and raised surfer who was a model and artist before completing a university degree. A few years ago she started MIKOH Swimwear with her sister, Oleema (who also dates pro surfer Taj Burrow), and the company has grown exponentially with their bikinis now sold worldwide. Smart, beautiful, and business savvy—it seems Kelly is the one who got lucky.

Jordy Smith and Lyndall Jarvis
South African surfer Jordy Smith proposed to longtime girlfriend Lyndall Jarvis last year, dropping to one knee while they were both riding a wave. Voted as FHM South Africa’s Sexiest Woman in 2009 (see Jordy’s Instagram boast above), Jarvis manages a successful modeling and TV career while still traveling with her new husband to the most exotic surf destinations on the planet. “I’m the luckiest man alive,” was a recent post by Jordy. He may be right.

Michel Bourez and Vaimiti Laurens
Michel Bourez has rocketed up to No. 2 in the world rankings and has won two events already in 2014. He puts his incredible year down to recently becoming a father and the support of his partner, Vaimiti Laurens. “I settled down so much when I met Vaimiti. I just knew she was the one, and then to have a little boy was incredible,” Bourez told GrindTV.com. “When I surf, I surf for them.” Vaimiti is a famous singer in Tahiti, as well as a model, and has added motherhood to her list of accomplishments. Soon she just might have a surfing world title won for her.

Joel and Monica Parkinson
Childhood sweethearts Joel and Monica had their first daughter, Evie, when Joel was just 22. Since then Monica has been Joel’s rock, and they have added another two children to their brood. “Looking back I so was young when I had Evie,” Joel told GrindTV.com. “Maybe I wasn’t ready, but with Monica I just knew we’d be all right. Without her, and my family, all my success would mean nothing.”
