Surfers have a way with women—well at least pro surers like Kelly Slater and Taj Burrow do. Perhaps it’s their model-good looks, fat-sponsor contracts and freakish surfing talent, or maybe they’re just lucky? Either way, there are at least seven ladykillers lurking the waters.
Kelly Slater’s otherworldly-surfing talent comes with a healthy bank balance and sheet-metal-cutting green eyes, so it’s no wonder he has never had any problems in the lady-killing stakes. He’s famously dated Pamela Anderson and has also been tied to actress Cameron Diaz and super models Gisselle Bündchen and Bar Refaeli. But, sorry ladies, the 11-time world champion is taken. Slater has been in a stable relationship with his girlfriend Kalani Miller for six years now.
Jack Freestone is a former world junior surfing champion from the Gold Coast in Australia. Blessed with a high-degree of talent, and even higher cheekbones, Freestone has a huge social media following, primarily consisting of teenage girls. Unfortunately for them, he is off the market, having been in a two-year relationship with Alana Blanchard, universally regarded as the hottest surfer girl on the planet.
Just prior to the recent Drug Aware Margaret River Pro Taj Burrow announced that he was to become a father, effectively ending a great surfing bachelorhood. One of the highest paid surfers in the sport, the 36-year-old has been on tour for 18 years, traveling the world and never afraid to enjoy the good things in life. He has dated a string of French, Australian and American models, but it is the 25-year-old Rebecca Johnson, a former Australia’s Next Top Model star, that has finally tied the great swordsman down.
After a successful career in professional surfing, Luke Stedman started the clothing label Insted We Smile as well as a modeling career, basing himself between Bali, London and Sydney. The 35-year-old Australian has a child with his ex-wife, Hawaiian surfer and model Malia Jones, and did a Kooples ad campaign with his ex-girlfriend Indonesian model Farahini Empel. More recently, he has been dating Australian model and rising fashion designer Kym Ellery.
With handsome Gallic looks, fluency in three languages and the mantle as France’s most successful professional surfer, Mikey Picon never struggled gaining the attention of members of the opposite sex. Since retiring from competition in 2009, he has launched the underwear apparel label Moskova as well as holding manager roles with long-term sponsor Quiksilver. However, his greatest achievement is perhaps his relationship with Biarritz model Filippa Hamilton, who is the former face of Ralph Lauren, a muse for famous fashion photogs as Mario Testino and Terry Richardson and the mother of his child.
One of the original surfer playboys from the 1970s, Bunker Spreckels was the heir to Spreckels sugar fortune and also the stepson of Clarke Gable. Upon receiving his multimillion dollar inheritance at 21, he embarked on a hedonistic five-year orgy of drugs, sex, hunting, martial arts, women, wild road trips and surfing. The hedonism was best showcased in his biography called Surfing’s Divine Prince of Decadence. At his most outrageous he would often turn up to the surf breaks of the North Shore in an open top limousine full of Playboy models. Sadly, it didn’t last, and Spreckles died of a drug overdose aged just 29.
