The Foot Traffic Flat Marathon, Half-Marathon, 5K and 8K Trail Race
Where: Sauvie Island, OR
Why Run It: Running the Flat, as this popular race is known, is a Fourth of July tradition in the Pacific Northwest. The pancake-like course on the farmlands of Sauvie Island, about 20 minutes north of downtown Portland, is a perfect opportunity to win a personal record. But it's also ideal for simply savoring the beauty of this island — keep an eye out for wildlife along the coastal, two-lane road. Residents serve runners their legendary strawberry shortcake at the post-race celebration, which also features bluegrass bands, hot dogs, and, in true Pacific Northwest flavor, veggie dogs. Hefty medals round out the unique offerings.
