Volkslaufe 5K, 10K, 20K
Where: Frankenmuth, MI
Why Run It: The Fourth of July may be the most American of holidays, but this trio of well-organized, point-to-point races, whose name is German for “the people’s race,” does a fine job of honoring the German heritage of the small town of Frankenmuth. The 10K route runs past Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the largest Christmas store in the country, while 5Kers take a scenic trip through the Little Bavaria neighborhood. Residents along the course bring out hoses and sprinklers to offer runners some relief from temperatures that regularly reach the mid-90s. Overall and age group winners receive an authentic German stein — perfect for filling up with a refreshing creation from the Frankenmuth Brewery at the post-race party.
