It wasn’t until three decades after the airplane first took flight that a Michigan man named Clem Sohn thought to use the invention to fly unaided, in a home-sewn wingsuit. That event did not exactly inspire a generation of daredevils. More than a half century would pass before wingsuits became commercially available to advanced parachutists looking for a new thrill. It took YouTube to make the sport popular, as footage of its dangerous feats — short, unbelievable, perception-altering — has been shared by millions and inspired many to fly on their own. And though deaths have forced some jumpers to reassess and shift toward safer styles of flight, a handful of extreme flyers continue to push the sport. “The ultimate isn’t even a wingsuit,” says climber and BASE jumping star Dean Potter. “It would be to fly and land in something as close to the human body as you could get.” Here are the greatest wingsuit moments (so far.)
