May 2012: Landing without a Chute
The Jump: In Oxfordshire, England, British stuntman Gary Connery becomes the first to successfully land a wingsuit flight without using a parachute. The “landing strip” he uses is made up of nearly 18,600 volunteer-assembled cardboard boxes that break his fall.
Why It Matters: “It was the single most unbelievable moment in the sport, ever,” says Corliss. “I watched live, and was sure he was going to die. The calculations that his brain and body had to do to brace itself in those final seconds are just insane. I think it’s the single most dangerous thing a human’s ever done, aside from going to the moon.”Back to top
