The Jump: Twenty-three year old Loic Jean-Albert descends from a helicopter towards the top of a Swiss peak called Verbier, and glides down the mountain parallel to the snow, mere feet from the surface. A clip of the jump becomes one of Youtube’s first viral hits.
Why It Matters: Loic’s jump marks the beginning of “proximity flying,” the daring and dangerous art of gliding tretcherously close to the ground. “People had come close to the ground before — but he did it on purpose, repeatedly. He was ten years ahead of his time,” says Corliss.Back to top
