Return from the Deep
The Shot: Australian freediver Adam Stern swims up an underwater sandfall in Dean’s Blue Hole in Long Island, Bahamas, 2015.
The Photographer: Daan Verhoeven
The Full Story: Dean’s Blue Hole is the second deepest known blue hole on earth, plunging 663 feet. Since 2008, it’s also the site of Vertical Blue, a freediving competition that draws the world’s best. During the 2015 competition, underwater filmmaker Daan Verhoeven was more interested in capturing the blue hole’s most unique feature: an underwater sandfall, where the taper of the hole is just right to funnel sand. He didn’t have any trouble convincing record-holding Australian freediver Adam Strong to take a dive for the shot.Back to top
