The Full Story: For decades, the Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru, a 1,500-foot wall of nearly feature-less granite, was big-wall climbing’s greatest prize, having seen more failed attempts by elite teams than any other route in the Himalayas. In 2008, climbing dream team Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin, and Renan Ozturk attempted the Shark’s Fin, but were forced to turn back a mere 100 meters from the summit after losing the battle with a relentless snowstorm. In 2011, following significant life changes, the team returned to Meru, and were successful. Chin chronicled their multi-year odyssey in the film Meru, which debuted at Sundance in 2015, and garnered mainstream attention at a level not normally enjoyed by climbing films.Back to top
