Catamount Trail, VT
Vermont’s premier cross-country trail is quintessential New England: 300 miles of rolling hills through sprawling farms, picturesque villages, and the continuous smell of wood-burning stoves. The Catamount passes through some serious northeastern backcountry, but is also anchored by the state’s best Nordic centers along the way, so you’ll have plenty of well-groomed options. The route is also speckled with some cushy inns, including the historic Trapp Family Lodge and the beloved Blueberry Hill Inn, with its multi-course seasonal dinners. The Catamount Trail Association provides everything you need to plan your trek, and use of the trail doesn’t cost a penny.
