Devils Den, Big Bend National Park, TX
Located in the hugely underrated 800,000-acre Big Bend National Park, Devil’s Den slot canyon in the Chihuahuan Desert is visited by as few as five hikers per year, according to park rangers. The short 5.5-mile trek takes you up a dry but well-shaded creek bed to a series of caves and natural arches gouged out of hard limestone. In the rainy season, cool arroyo pools called tinajas provide welcome respite from the oven-like heat. The southern edge of the canyon reveals a broad desert plain and the jagged relief of the Santiago Mountains.
