Dipsea Trail, CA
Every second Sunday in June for the last 105 years the Dipsea trail hosts one of the most famous off-road running races in the world. The rest of the year it’s simply one of the country’s most stunning spots for an incredible workout. The beauty of the Dipsea — aside from, well, its beauty — is the fact that it’s just 7.5 miles long. That’s not to say it’s easy: As it travels up and over the shoulder of Marin County’s Mt Tamalpais to the bohemian coastal enclave of Stinson Beach, it ascends nearly 700 roughly carved steps, winds through tight groves of 300-foot-tall Redwood trees in Muir Woods, and passes over notoriously brutal climbs, like Cardiac, Dynamite, and Insult Hill, gaining 2,200 feet of elevation along the way. And, unless you’re prepared to double that, be sure you arrange for a lift back from the beach.
