Franconia Ridge Traverse, White Mountains, NH
Located in Franconia Notch State Park, this 9-mile ridge holds the second-highest collection of summits in the White Mountains (after the Presidential Peaks), making for one of the finest lines in the Northeast. Teetering along a knife-edge spine with huge views of the valley below, you bag three 5,000-footers in the process: Little Haystack Mountain, Mt. Lincoln, and Mt. Lafayette. Sitting just two hours north of Boston, it gets crowded in high season, so aim for midweek in the fall when the crowds have thinned and the foliage is peaking. “I think it’s the single best day-hike in the country,” says climber Jonathan Waterman.
