Kane Creek Trail, Moab, UT
What’s better than a mountain bike tour of Moab’s famous slickrock and world-class two-wheel terrain? The same ride at 30 mph — uphill. Not all of the trails around Moab are open to off-road vehicles, but hundreds of miles are, and the 13-mile Kane Creek Trail is a favorite of dirt-bikers and jeep runners. It may not sound long for a drive, but challenging sandy washes (even quicksand), river crossings, and large rock shelves often slow things to a crawl. It is possible to do this with a stock truck, but a few inches of clearance and a winch will make life a lot easier. Four-wheelers will have their hands especially full with a rock staircase in Muleshoe Canyon, about 10 miles into the trail, where you have to climb the steps, while threading the needle between a wall on the right and a 1,000-foot drop on the left.
