Lakeshore Trail, Pictured Rocks National Seashore, MI
Michigan’s most spectacular trail, and arguably the finest summertime hike in the Midwest, is the aptly named Lakeshore Trail, which hugs Superior’s shoreline from Munising to Grand Marais in the Upper Peninsula. Over 44 miles, it’s got everything from cliff-top vistas and waterfalls to white-sand beaches and high rolling dunes. Rarely do you lose sight of the shore and even more rarely do you encounter fellow hikers. Plus, nobody lives in this part of the state — we’re talking about one of God’s sub-contracted Edens practically vacuumed of people. Beaver, fox, mink, and black bear abound, though, and elk and moose aren’t uncommon. Nowadays, even the occasional wolf roams these woods.
