Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail; WA, OR, CA
Thanks to the movie Wild, in which Reese Witherspoon portrayed real-life Pacific Crest Trail rookie Cheryl Strayed, the beauty and breathtaking diversity of this iconic 2,650-mile long-distance trail can be experienced from your living room. But even the big screen doesn’t come close to capturing the scale of this border-to-border thru-hike that crosses Washington, Oregon, and California, through just about every western landscape you could ask for. The PCT climbs from sea level in the Southern California desert to the high sierra, eventually reaching the drenched moss-covered Pacific Northwest — if you manage to hike the whole thing, that is. Don’t have six months to spare? At least head to the classic mountain retreat in Oregon, Timberline Lodge, and make the 12-mile round-trip to Paradise Park, beneath Mount Hood.
