Parker Mesa, Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles may be known for its maddening traffic, but it also happens to have some of the greatest easy-access urban hiking in America. Parker Mesa in Topanga State Park, just north of Santa Monica on the Pacific Coast Highway, is accessed via the beautifully lush singletrack climb through Los Liones Canyon. A 1,500-foot, four-mile climb delivers you to a bald ridgeline that affords views well beyond the city sprawl to the often-snow-capped San Bernadino Mountains, as well as typically endless views over Santa Monica Bay and the Pacific Ocean. But it’s the view to the north, toward Malibu, that is a stark reminder of just how wild this stretch of Southern California coastline is still, despite the development.
