The Boulevard Trail, Great Smokey National Park, TN
It’s hard to find isolation quite like you’ll find in the Smokies. The eight-mile Boulevard Trail — one of hundreds among the half-a-million-acre Great Smoky Mountains National Park — requires a short-but-stiff climb to LeConte Lodge. But it’s worth the effort: the lodge has seven intimately rustic cabins at the summit of Mount Le Conte and, arguably, the grandest views in the park. There’s no electricity, but it does offer flush-toilets, kerosene lamps, and washbasins for a sponge bath, plus a hot breakfast in the morning (make reservations far in advance). The mostly-downhill hike out is your reward for all the work you put in the previous day.
