Trail 401, Crested Butte, CO
The 401 trail outside Crested Butte is a lung-busting high-alpine loop for singletrack connoisseurs. The entire ride is a short and sweet 15 miles, but given its 11,000-foot altitude, you definitely have to earn it. After a five-mile climb to Schofield Pass, you’ll rise above treeline and finally catch a glimpse of the Elk Mountains and its famous Maroon Bells. Here, you pick up the “401,” the designation given to the exhilarating several-mile, 1,500-foot downhill that passes through a sea of wild flowers, sometimes so thick you feel like you’re flying through a car wash. The fast and flowy switchbacks seem to have been engineered for fat-tire fun, but take care: crystal clear Rocky Mountain views make it tough to keep your eyes on the trail.
