White Rim Trail, Canyonlands National Park, UT
Just northwest of Moab is a hundred-mile off-road route in Canyonlands National Park that circumnavigates the entire Island in the Sky Mesa, with several white-knuckle sections of switchbacks to spice things up. Popular with motocrossers as well as mountain bikers, this is a relatively straightforward off-road challenge, as long as you can handle the steep climbs and vertiginous drop-offs (the shorter your wheel-base, the better). Over two to three days you’ll have to outsmart deep sand and exposed sections, like the famous Schaffer switchbacks, but well-spaced campgrounds allow you to take it slow.
