When I first started shooting in 1978, I didn’t know anyone. I used to see all the photographers at the time but was always too scared to go talk to them. Over time I got to know all the surfers and ended up sending my photos to Surfing mag. They ran one and I got a check for $25. I was hooked! I ended up working for Quiksilver and this was an early outtake shot of Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew. I used to get $100 per ad and all the clothes I could wear—I had it made! Photo: Bielmann 32 / 42
